Under the July Monarchy (1830-1848), Louis-Philippe I, “King of the French”, reigned within the framework of the Charter. A period of industrial growth and the dawn of the railways, it ended with the February 1848 revolution. Born of the Three Glorious Days (27-29 July 1830), the regime rested on a property-based suffrage reserved for the wealthiest. François Guizot dominated political life in the 1840s; the refusal to widen the vote fuelled the banquet campaign that led to the 1848 revolution.
