Childebert II

King of the Franks · 575-596 · born on 6 April 570, died in March 596

Son of Sigebert I and Brunhild, Childebert II succeeded his murdered father in 575, at the age of five, under the regency of his mother and of his tutor (nutricius) Gogon, who wielded strong political influence.

Adopted by his uncle Guntram, who designated him as heir through the treaty of Andelot (587), he inherited Burgundy at his death in 592, reuniting Austrasia and Burgundy. He died in 596, leaving the kingdom to his young sons Theudebert II and Theuderic II, under Brunhild’s tutelage.
