Philippe III le Hardi

Son of Saint Louis, Philip III took part in the crusade of Tunis (1270), during which his father died. King of France in 1270, he relied on his counsellors and continued the expansion of the royal domain, notably through the inheritance of the county of Toulouse (1271).

The crusade of Aragon (1285), launched to place his son Charles of Valois on the throne of Aragon after the Sicilian Vespers, turned to disaster: defeated and sick, he died at Perpignan on the way back.
