First Empire

The First Empire (1804-1814/1815) was the regime founded by Napoleon Bonaparte, crowned Emperor of the French. Victor of Austerlitz and a great reformer (Civil Code, banks, lycées), he dominated Europe before his fall in 1814-1815. The coronation took place at Notre-Dame de Paris on 2 December 1804. After the disastrous Russian campaign (1812), the Empire collapsed: Napoleon abdicated in 1814, returned for the Hundred Days, then was defeated at Waterloo in June 1815.
