Charles III le Gros
Western Emperor and King of the Franks · 884-887 · born in 839, died on 13 January 888
Son of Louis the German, Charles III the Fat became Emperor of the West in 881 and king of West Francia in 884, reuniting for a time almost the whole Carolingian empire.
Negotiating with the Vikings besieging Paris (885-886) and paying them a tribute, he avoided direct confrontation, a decision that completed his discredit. Deposed in 887 by his nephew Arnulf, he died in 888: his fall put an end to the last durable reunification of the Carolingian Empire.
