Charles IV le Bel

King of France · 1322-1328 · born on 18 June 1294, died on 1 February 1328

Son of Philip IV the Fair, Charles IV the Fair was the last king of the direct Capetian line. His reign was marked by tensions with England over Aquitaine.

He died in 1328 with no male heir. His death opened the succession dispute: his cousin Philip of Valois, closer through the male line, was preferred to Edward III of England, whose rights passed through his mother. The direct Capetian branch died out and the Valois came to the throne.
