Philippe V le Long
King of France · 1316-1322 · born in 1293, died on 3 January 1322
Son of Philip IV the Fair, Philip V the Tall obtained the regency at Louis X’s death, then the throne after the death of John I the Posthumous, setting aside his niece Joan: a precedent, confirmed in 1328, that excluded women from the succession.
A reforming king, he tried to unify weights and measures and strengthened the Chambre des comptes. He died in 1322 with no surviving son; his brother Charles IV succeeded him.
