Son of Clovis and Clotilde, Childebert I ruled over Paris from 511. He took part in the conquests against the Burgundians and led a successful expedition against the Visigoths.

With no male heir, he founded the church of Sainte-Croix-Saint-Vincent in 558, the future abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, to house the relics of Saint Vincent of Saragossa brought back after his expedition of 542. He died the same year, his kingdom passing to his brother Chlothar I.
