President of the Republic · 1924-1931 · born on 1 August 1863, died on 18 June 1937
A republican from the Gard, Gaston Doumergue became President of the Republic in 1924, the first Protestant to hold the office. A modest and popular president, he was much appreciated.
Recalled in 1934 to form a government of national unity during the Stavisky affair, he failed to stem the political crisis.
