Gontran
King of the Franks · 561-592 · born in 532, died on 28 March 592
Son of Chlothar I, Guntram ruled Burgundy from 561, with Chalon-sur-Saône as his capital. A pious and popular king, he strove to calm the wars between his brothers Sigebert and Chilperic.
With no surviving male heir, he adopted his nephew Childebert II, who became his official heir through the treaty of Andelot (587) and succeeded him at his death in 592. His memory long remained venerated as that of a just king.
