Period without a king · 737-743

After the death of Theuderic IV (737), the mayor of the palace Charles Martel governed alone, without a king: proof of the eclipse of Merovingian royal power.

At Charles Martel’s death (741), his sons Pippin the Short and Carloman restored a Merovingian king in 743, Childeric III, before Pippin had himself elected king of the Franks in 751.
