Patrice de Mac Mahon
President of the Republic · 1873-1879 · born on 13 May 1808, died on 16 October 1893
Marshal of France, Patrice de Mac Mahon distinguished himself in the Crimean War and then in Italy, notably at Magenta (1859). In 1873 he succeeded Adolphe Thiers as the second president of the Third Republic.
In favour of a monarchist restoration, he clashed with the republican majority of the Chamber: his dissolution of 1877 (the 16 May crisis) failed. He resigned in 1879.
