Thierry III
King of the Franks · 673-691 · died in 691
Third son of Clovis II and Bathilde, Theuderic III was proclaimed king in 673 by the mayor of the palace Ebroin, then set aside in favour of Childeric II. After the latter’s murder (675), he became king again.
His long reign saw the power of the mayors of the palace, from Ebroin to Pépin of Herstal — victorious at Tertry in 687 — durably assert itself. He died in 691: the king retained his own functions and legitimacy, but the balance of power had shifted towards the Pippinids.
