Louis III

King of West Francia · 879-882 · born in 863, died on 5 August 882

Eldest son of Louis the Stammerer and Ansgard, Louis III shared the kingdom with his brother Carloman II at their father’s death (879).

In 881 he won the victory of Saucourt-en-Vimeu over the Vikings, celebrated by the Ludwigslied, a poem in Old High German composed after the battle. He died in 882, killed in an accident while chasing a young woman.
