Paul Deschanel

President of the Chamber of Deputies and a member of the Académie française, Paul Deschanel was elected President of the Republic in January 1920 against Georges Clemenceau, taking office in February.

On the night of 23-24 May 1920, he fell from the presidential train near Montargis. Exhausted and ill, he resigned on 21 September 1920, after seven months in office. Elected senator in 1921, he died in 1922.
